Manuka Honey. What is it, and WHY is it beneficial?

Not a lot of new findings have taken industries by storm quite like Manuka Honey. So why is it getting all of the praise? What exactly is it? What are its benefits? Let’s begin with where it comes from and what exactly it is. Manuka Honey is produced by bees that pollinate the Leptospermum Scoparium, or the manuka bush, which grows predominantly in New Zealand and can only be made for a few weeks a year when in flower. Manuka Honey is complex honey that goes far beyond simple table honey or even the raw honey which has been used as a medicinal healer since ancient times because of its bioactive properties. Manuka Honey also happens to share similar benefits with that of tea tree oil as the Manuka bush is a part of the tea tree family. Methylglyoxal (MGO) has been demonstrated to be the naturally occurring compound that makes Manuka Honey so special as it has superior antibacterial properties. MGO is formed in the honey from Manuka nectar, and as the honey ripens, the MGO content can increase. The more MGO in the Manuka Honey the stronger its benefits will be.
